Winter Enchantment 2026 Is Coming Soon—New Discoveries Await
The frosty sparkle of a Maine winter brings its own enchantment to the season—and to our annual Winter Enchantment feature auction, coming to you this February at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries.
This exceptional sale opens the new year 2026 with outstanding new discoveries in Maine art by revered masters including James Fitzgerald, Dahlov Ipcar, Imero Gobbato, plus work by William Thon, and Andrew Winter, celebrating the history of the region’s American art legacy and our ongoing commitment to discovering and preserving important works for future generations.
Detail from Nightmare and Her Foal (1990) by Dahlov Ipcar. Oil on canvas, signed and dated on the reverse, unframed. A rare and distinctive work created in association with the artist’s book of short stories of the same title.
The glory of the full range of American art is a true showcase not to be missed, offering both breadth and depth—from the contemporary work of Salvatore Scarpitta to beloved traditionalists such as Thomas Kinkade, alongside works by Norman Rockwell, the bracing American Impressionism of Emil Gruppe, and Jessie Arms Botke, celebrated for her luminous imagery.
The scope of Winter Enchantment is truly global, with international highlights by Jean Dufy, André Lanskoy, and Giovanni Paolo, including a pencil-signed proof printed and published by Atelier Crommelynck, Paris, bearing their blindstamp—After Pablo Picasso, Tête de faune (Head of a Faun).
Our Nautical Collection spotlights the singular art of scrimshaw, led by a magnificently decorated 19th-century powder horn with impeccable maritime provenance rooted in Belfast, Maine, alongside other important and rare examples.
The auction also features a strong offering of Design, with celebrated designers including Tiffany Studios, Tiffany & Co., Mark Knipe, and Yamanaka, presenting timeless works that seamlessly bridge design and function. Fine Jewelry offerings include important work by AGA Correa, a vintage platinum and diamond ring, and multiple vintage pieces by Fulco di Verdura, prized for their enduring elegance. The Watch category brings undeniable credibility to the sale, led by a Patek Philippe, joined by highly recognizable and collectible brands including Rolex, Omega, Movado, Porsche Design, IWC, and more.
The Clocks selection is equally compelling, highlighted by a rare Simon Willard timepiece and an elegant Viennese mantel clock. Collectors of Asian art will encounter large Hindu sculptures and two finely preserved Japanese wakizashi, complete with documentation. Musical highlights include a superb Steinway Model M piano, alongside a classic Rock-Ola 1422 jukebox, an iconic early postwar favorite!
And for bibliophiles, we are proud to present two breathtaking rarities spanning four centuries of the printer’s art—an awe-inspiring 1651 folio edition of The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer, and an extraordinary rarity representing the beginning of the legend of Ernest Hemingway, in the first American edition of his 1925 Lost Generation short story collection, In Our Time.
Bidders will also discover a distinguished selection of American furniture, including Eldred Wheeler and Gustav Stickley designs, alongside European furniture, folk-art Americana, classic décor, rare collectibles, and so much more—all carefully selected to reflect the breadth and museum quality objects for which Thomaston Place is known.
