The Sculpture of Sound—Paul Wegner’s Jazz in Bronze

Sculptors are the unsung poets of the art world—shaping form as poets shape verse. And as poets build meaning through stanzas, sculptors build meaning through composition and movement, interweaving narrative, rhythm, and emotion into their works as expressions in physical form.

Lot # 3227: Paul D. Wegner’sClose enough for Jazz (#4)" an extremely rare limited edition sculpture.

Similarly, as jazz artists build on notes, every movement in time an expression and an echo of the human experience—and like jazz musicians breaking free from convention to give new life to movement and improvisation—sculptors like Paul D. Wegner capture this very same movement in time and spontaneity—in stillness.

As we make waves preparing for our highly anticipated crossover music and art auction—the first event of its kind at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries—we are excited to unite these two worlds in a landmark celebration. Now is the time—a once in a generation opportunity—and there’s no better moment than right now to elevate your art and music collection with "Close Enough For Jazz," a breathtaking bronze sculpture by Paul D. Wegner.

Produced in 1984, this rare and extraordinary work captures the spirit of New Orleans jazz and its legendary musicians, while also showcasing the masterful talent of an acclaimed American sculptor.

Notably, Lot # 3227 is also accompanied by distinguished provenance, and presented at auction for the first time from the personal archive of the late Mr. Herb Belkin, a collector of limited edition prints and numbered editions of contemporary art, and a visionary in limited edition music releases. Signed by Wegner on the base, and with accompanying literature, this sculpture is a true testament to both Wegner’s masterful craftsmanship and deep appreciation for jazz culture—and an appreciation equally shared by the music visionary Herb Belkin.

This exquisite sculpture depicts a jazz trio captivated in performance, expressing the vibrancy and rhythmic energy of the New Orleans music scene. With its intricate detailing and expressive hand-applied color, “Close Enough For Jazz” stands out as a showpiece in any serious collection.
