Thomaston, Maine — An exceptionally rare collection of 1930s jewelry discovered during Free Appraisal Day exceeded expectations at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ first auction of the season.

A standout in the successful Winter Enchantment auction, the jewelry drew strong interest from collectors worldwide. Comparable examples attributed to Fulco di Verdura are held in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, reinforcing the significance of the designs. Proceeds from the sale will benefit a Maine-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing food assistance to families throughout the region.

The discovery comes as Free Appraisal Day marks its 50th anniversary in 2026, first established in 1976. During a recent Tuesday session of the auction house’s longstanding tradition, seven exceptional pieces were uncovered and later consigned in partnership with a local Maine charity.

“These are the kinds of remarkable discoveries that make every auction unique,” said Kaja Veilleux of Thomaston Place Auction Galleries. “We are especially proud to have presented this collection in support of a local Maine charity, ensuring that these miniature works of art are preserved for future generations while also helping families in our community today.”

For fifty years, Free Appraisal Day has revealed rare and significant works that captivate collectors worldwide. Through this enduring tradition, the Maine-based auction house continues to showcase treasures on the global stage while remaining deeply committed to the local community.

The auction house is currently accepting consignments for its upcoming Summer Splendor auction taking place June 26th, 27th and 28th, with a consignment deadline of April 17th.
